Y Station: Round Top, Texas’
A few weeks back, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Len from the Y-Station to learn more about his unique venue and the story behind it. With over 30 years of experience as an antique show and mall vendor, Len's passion for curating distinctive and quirky items shines through at Y-Station. We discussed how he transformed this space, his sourcing process, and his commitment to creating an inviting destination for both vendors and customers. Here's what he had to say about his journey, the Y-Station community, and what sets his venue apart from the rest.
Business Operations & Inventory
What inspired you to start your thrift/antique store?
I’ve been an antique show and mall vendor for over 30 years. When the venue I was selling at came up for sale, I decided to purchase it, and that’s how Ystation began. The official dates for our next show are October 12th to 26th, 2024, but early shoppers are always welcome! Some vendors will open as early as October 5th.
How do you source the items in your store?
Personally, I source items from all over—south to Miami, west to Kansas, and north to New England. Ystation's 15 to 20 vendors also bring in products from everywhere.
How do you decide which items to accept or display in your store?
With years of experience, I have an eye for items that are different, unusual, fun, and quirky.
What types of items are most popular with your customers?
The variety at Ystation is a big draw. We offer a wide range of collectible, vintage, antique, repurposed, and upscale high-quality items.
How do you price your items? Is there a specific strategy you use?
My pricing is based on years of experience. Sometimes I’m spot on, and other times, it turns into a fire sale!
How often do you refresh your inventory?
Inventory is continuously updated—daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly.
Do you specialize in any particular type of items or eras?
Not really. You never know what you’ll find at Ystation or from our vendors.
Special note: This show, we have a massive vintage Christmas and holiday area in the actual Ystation.
Customer Engagement
What do you think sets your store apart from other thrift/antique stores?
Our personal service! Ystation is a mid-sized venue that has become a destination for its quality, variety, fun, and great service. We’ve essentially rebuilt the store over the last 3 to 5 years, both structurally and vendor-wise. In fact, we still have a vendor who has been with us since Y2K!
How do you engage with your local community?
We do several things to give back. Every show, we dedicate a community room where all the money raised goes directly to a local nonprofit. This show, we’re supporting the Round Top Carmine Educational Foundation. In the past, we’ve worked with volunteer fire departments, Turtle Wing Foundation, The Bugle Boy, and Gather n Grace. Down Home Ranch also has a building in our area where they sell plants and goods made by their clients (rent-free). Ystation is also a proud member of both the Carmine and Round Top Chambers of Commerce.
On Tuesday, October 22nd, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM, we’re hosting Corn Dogs on the Corner and a Royers Pie Haven pop-up pie event to benefit Gather n Grace.
What has been the most rewarding part of owning a thrift/antique store?
The most rewarding part is revitalizing a corner lot with an old gas station, garage, turkey barn, and other buildings that many thought should be torn down. It’s been fulfilling to give our vendors a safe, comfortable venue to display and sell their goods.
Do you offer any special promotions, sales, or events for customers?
Yes! For example, we’re hosting a Corn Dogs on the Corner event on October 22nd, with a pie pop-up from Royers Pie Haven, benefiting Gather n Grace. We also hold other customer appreciation events throughout the year.
How do you handle customer feedback or requests for specific items?
We address them as best we can and continuously strive to improve with every show.
Industry Insights
What trends have you noticed in the thrift/antique industry recently?
Honestly, I don’t pay much attention to trends. I just do my thing. However, several of Ystation’s vendors are more attuned to the latest industry trends.
How has the rise of online marketplaces affected your business?
It’s hard to say, but there will always be clients who need to see, touch, and bond with an item before buying it.
What challenges do you face as a thrift/antique store owner?
The biggest challenge is continuously improving, both personally and professionally. I’m always trying to learn.
How do you stay informed about the value and authenticity of the items you sell?
Through constant participation in the marketplace, networking with other vendors, and using the internet to research and verify items.
Sustainability & Impact
This section is about how your business contributes to environmental sustainability and supports your community. Share details about your eco-friendly practices and any initiatives to give back.
How does your store contribute to sustainability and environmental preservation?
We’ve been recycling long before it became popular. By preserving and restoring historic buildings on the property, we help contribute to environmental sustainability.

It’s part of the American dream. I believe hard work allows individuals to have a successful life, and our store enables others to do the same.
How do you educate your customers about the benefits of thrifting and buying antiques?
Through daily interactions and conversations with our customers.
